A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology investigated the associations between periodontitis, systemic inflammation, and glycemic status. In this cross-sectional study, 2,036 participants, aged 39-66 years, were divided into three groups; vis, normoglycemic, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and diabetic. Among these subjects, the associations between periodontitis severity and glycemic status were examined. It was found that severe periodontitis was associated with IFG and diabetes with odds ratios of 1.6 and 2.4, respectively. On mediation analysis, C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count (WBC), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), were associated with both periodontitis severity and glycemic status. Whereas neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was associated with periodontitis severity but not glycemic status. Additionally, CRP, WBC, and PLR mediated 8%, 13%, and 6%, respectively, of the association between severe periodontitis and diabetes. While, similar proportions mediated were noted for the periodontitis-IFG association. Thus, the findings supported the role of systemic inflammation as mediators of the associations between periodontitis and IFG or diabetes.
